How I Spent My Day Off :)

The college was closed yesterday for Presidents Day. I like when a holiday falls on a Monday because Monday is my busiest day at work. If the evening lab is a long one I am at work for almost 12 hours. When Monday is a holiday, I have less grading for that week. And I feel that the rest of the week flies by faster.

So yesterday I stayed home. I had plans to declutter the patio and water plants, but I didn't even go outside except to toss things to the compost bin.

I got up early and cooked. I still had a bit of leftover curries from the last week, so I cooked brown rice, greens and fish.

Mustard greens with tomatoes.
Normally I saute mustard greens with a pinch of salt, black pepper, turmeric powder and garlic. This time I cooked greens with chopped tomatoes.

Fish in olive oil & butter.
Fish was just so so. I really don't like frozen fish. Even after marinating fish in spices and olive oil for several hours, it had no flavor. Then I added some butter and chopped parsley, but still I didn't like it.

Then I sat down in front of the TV and did some mending while watching Netflix. I have a pile of clothes to mend. Each one by itself is not a big job: re-stitching a hem,  patching up a small hole in a jean pocket, mending a pillow case etc. But small jobs have accumulated in to a big pile, and it had started to stress me out. What I chose on Netflix was a Finnish program with English subtitles, so I couldn't really follow the story while sewing. I learned how to say 'no' in Finnish (ei). 😊 After mending two items, I noticed that my lunch bag has a ripped seam as well. Two out, one in. At least I'm making progress, albeit slowly. 😐

Later in the afternoon a friend dropped by, so I we had tea. After that I made juice (a mix of greens and fruits) for the week, packed lunch and put in the fridge, and filled up water bottles. I also cut up some strawberries and soaked oats for breakfast. I soak oats overnight, then in the morning add dried cranberries, pumpkin seeds and cook it on the stove top. I add fresh fruits on top, if I have any.

Breakfast prepared in advance.
Then I had dinner, cleaned up the kitchen and watched an old episode of Midsomer Murders. I like British mysteries like Father Brown, Inspector Morse, Foyle's War Inspector Lewis etc, but I can't find any new series on Netflix.
I was too lazy to go outside to see the supermoon, but it should be visible today as well.

So that's how I spent my day off. I relaxed, and also got several things done. Overall I think it was a good day. 😊

Did you see the supermoon?

  2. Glad you had a nice restful day. The greens and tomatoes look delicious. I am not a fan of frozen fish either, especially a white fleshed fish, but I will admit I love scallops and they freeze and retain their flavor well.
It was raining here last night and is pouring down tonight so moon viewing is not going to happen.

    1. Oh, I too love scallops. Yes, frozen white fish doesn't keep flavor. Fish like tuna is better, but it's more expensive. :)

  3. Hi Nil, Yes, I did see it, but I didn't realize that it was a supermoon. I just noticed that it looked full and bright. Lula kept wanting to go outside last night; maybe that's why. I put her on the leash and went outside with her, just to watch for coyotes. Your meals are so impressive! You eat such a wide variety of foods. I tend to eat the same things. I bet you are very healthy. You eat all the right foods.

    1. Usually I like trying new food, Stephenie. So when I see an unfamiliar vegetable or greens, I'd buy it. Recently a friend gave me a can of snails. I haven't made up my mind to eat that though. :O

I think I will give it back. :)

  4. I didn't see the super moon, it was all rainy and stormy here. I don't really like frozen fish either. I do like smoked fish, it is flavourful even when frozen. As always, your food look delicious (even the fish).

You might like Unforgotten on Netflix. It is a British mystery series that I really enjoy. Each has six episodes and it is an investigation into old unsolved cases. I really like the characters and the storyline is well thought through. x

    1. I did watch Unforgotten, Christina. :) I like Nicola Walker, she is a very good actress. I don't think there are new episodes on Netflix at the moment though. I should check again.

  5. I did notice the moon was big and bright, both last night and tonight, Nil, but I hadn't realized it was a supermoon!

Sounds like you made full use of having a day off from work, yesterday. The mustard greens cooked with tomato looks good - very colorful! Too bad the fish was only so-so. Sometimes, when I buy frozen fish (usually pollock), I make a curry with it - generally, I make the gravy first, and then, add the fish as it doesn't need to cook for long (it tends to break apart, otherwise).

Hope you have a good week.

    1. I must try your method of cooking fish, Bless. The fish I have is flounder. I bought a big bag of frozen fillets and was wondering what else to do with it. :)

  6. Yes, 3 times to the moon, saw it rising yesterday and then setting this morning as I was getting up, out my bedroom window, and just now, have not long come in from walking Mirrhi and watched it rise. Beautiful rich colour, like a big pumpkin in the sky. All your meals look great. I soak my oats overnight too, and add a spoon of natural yoghurt as well. Have you seen Endeavour, it's about Inspector Morse when he was a rookie, really good. And what about Vera or Shetland, both crime series adapted from books by Ann Cleve...you'd probably enjoy the books too, but no staying up late 😆

    1. I've seen both Endeavor and Shetland. I can't find Vera on Netflix here. Hmmm I don't think I should have more books, before reading what I already have. Heheee

    2. We can never have too many books Nil 😉Maybe your library will have it. Shame Netflix doesn't have Vera, she's terrific!

  7. We're watching a Finnish show with English subtitles, too. A crime series called Bordertown. Fun but intense!

No supermoon for us. It's been overcast lately.:-(

    1. Priscilla, Yes Bordertown is the one I watched. :) It's a bit dark, but I liked it. At times I was trying to see if I could recognize the difference between Finnish and Russian. :)

  8. I wish I was as organised as you are, Nil, when it comes to preparing food for the days ahead. I'm sure I'd be more likely to eat healthily if I was. X

    1. Oh, I'm not that organized, Jules. :)
There are days when I open a can of chickpeas and eat it as my dinner.
I can't stand cafeteria food (too oily for my taste), so I have to have homemade lunches.

  9. You had a good day! Cooking is a nice thing to do...and rewarding. I was going to say the fish looked so good but you say you are disappointed in them. Today it is snowing here :( Andrea

  10. Sounds like a very productive day. And one, about which you can feel happy, going to bed nicely tired. :-)

We saw the Super Snow Moon, the night before. We can't see it, till it is right over head, and we have to crane our necks, to do so. :-) We didn't do so, last night.

But the night before... I did look out back.... And what an amazing sight! Called him over, to see it too. When we put the lined patio door drapes over us, cutting out all inside light.... Allllll the snow cover, had tiny diamonds on it!!!!!!!! Just from the Full Moon!!!!!! It was a lovely and mesmerizing sight. Like a dancer's sparkly gown, was laid out, alllllll overrrrrrrr.... Because our world, is snow covered. -happy sigh-

  12. I also missed the super moon, Nil. And too bad the fish was disappointing but the other dishes looked good. I also like the British mysteries. Vera is on Acorn TV streaming and so are episodes of Hercule Poiret as well as other mysteries. I have an annual subscription which was $50.

    1. $50 for an annual subscription is a great price, Beatrice. Especially for lots of British mysteries. I only have Netflix and I also watch PBS Masterpiece Mysteries.

  13. Sorry to take so long to comment on your posting-overcome by events I suspect. I agree about frozen white fish having no flavor. It is too expensive, even when frozen, for such blah taste. We do have lots of tuna steaks on the grill though.
