This week, a large category 4 hurricane went across Florida. Initially the track showed a landfall in our area on Thursday, but then it shifted south. Though we were not even in the cone of error by Wednesday, we did experience somewhat heavy winds and rain. Today I read that it had caused at least 77 deaths.
The college closed on Tuesday. I stocked water and food, removed potted plants and bird feeders to the patio and tied down trash cans. Fortunately, when I woke up Thursday morning there were only small oak branches in the backyard. We didn't lose power, though I heard that thousands in our area were without power. The hurricane season ends on November 30th. I hope there won't be anymore this season.
I collected several twigs, acorns and ball moss, and created this. 😊
This morning I went to the nearby park for a walk, but it was closed. A sign said they would re-open on Monday. I think they needed time to clean up after the hurricane.
Last week I bought a huge jackfruit from an oriental market. I don't know how to pick a good jackfruit. Once I opened it up, I realized that it was a bit too ripe for cooking. But, as an experiment, I sautéed some. It turned sweeter after cooking, but it was still edible. 😀
I also made a jackfruit stew using canned green jackfruit.
A couple of weeks ago, I found an independent bookstore about 20 miles from my city. It's a very old dilapidated building with thousands of used books. I bought two fictions.
I also bought two non-fictions from a nearby thrift store.
I really need another bookshelf. 😀

You are fortunate that you did not get hit hard by the storm. My cousin lives in Cape Coral and although she, her house, and cars are ok, she said Cape Coral looks like a war zone and many others were not as fortunate. They expect to be without electricity for at least a month. I have seen jackfruit in the market but they are usually huge and I have no idea what to do with them. Next week we are headed to South Florida for the winter. I do worry about hurricane season going to the end of November. Stay Safe..

I'm glad to read that you escaped the worst of the hurricane and had very little damage to deal with. I've never tried jackfruit. Is it one of those things that takes on flavour easily or does it have its own distinct flavour? I know we can buy it canned in the UK but don't think I've ever seen fresh for sale.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you were spared the worst of this hurricane. I have never cooked with jackfruit but I have eaten a jackfruit curry dish before, nice. I wouldn't know how to spot a just ready to eat jackfruit either. It might not be a problem I have here in the UK, I have never seen a fresh one, just tins. The bookshop you discovered looks fab, I bet there are some treasures to be found. Have a lovely week x
