Today is the last day of May. I just checked the monthly expense EXCEL spreadsheet. Even without doing so I knew that this was a very expensive month. I went way over the budget.
There were several unplanned expenses. When I went to get the car serviced, I was told that the battery needed to be replaced. So I bought a new battery and the total came to $188.98. Then I bought a power washer from Aldi. Not a planned expense and it was $147.65. Other expenses included the trip to St. Augustine, gifts for family and meals at airports. After adding everything up, I had spent 89.9% of the take home salary in May. Because this didn't include the after tax retirement contribution and $250 towards the mortgage principal, obviously I have spent over 100% of May income. That means I have used some of the savings from the last month. 😞
More expenses are coming in June. I have been saving for summer months from each pay check because I won't get paid until September. So things should go smoothly even though the rate of savings won't be as high as I would like it to be.
Here's to a more frugal June! 🍸

(I think my comment didn't go through so I will try to re-phrase)...hopefully the summer will glide by. You are smart to have saved for the summer! (Travel is always expensive!) Andrea
ReplyDeleteYes Andrea, travel is expensive, especially international ones. Hopefully June will be better. :)
DeleteAt least Nil you are keeping a good track of your spending and can make some corrections in the next month when things blow out the month before. We had a holiday in May too, and although we consciously kept costs as minimal as possible, it's still a big and irregular expense. Meg:)
ReplyDeleteYes Meg, I think everything should be fine when I look at the average savings over several months. Some months are more expensive than others. :)
DeleteSome months tend to be more expensive than others, but, it seems like you have a good handle on your finances. You have the savings in place to cushion the extra spending and you'll be able to save more over the next couple of months to build up that cushion, again. I am sure it will even out, eventually, over the course of the year.
ReplyDeleteI think so too Bless. It will even out hopefully, still it's hard when I see the big numbers on the spreadsheet. :)
DeleteI agree with Bless. It seems like you have a good handle on your finances. If you said you had to resort to credit cards, now then I'd be shocked! Gorgeous roses, I bet they smell pretty, too.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Bless, you have a great handle on your finances, Nil. It will even out, like both of you have said. You're doing a great job.
ReplyDeleteThank you Belinda. :)
DeleteI think it's wonderful that you have a travel budget, and are such a disciplined saver. You are so attentive to what you spend. It's inspiring.
ReplyDeleteI'm not that disciplined, Stephenie. But I try. :)
DeleteThere's always something isn't there, good luck to a frugal June.
ReplyDeleteMarlene.
Thank you Marlene. I'm glad to see you are blogging again. 😊
DeleteI always enjoy hearing about your budgetting and saving. And it's good you have savings tucked away for unplanned expenses like your car. Enjoy your summer break.
ReplyDeleteThank you Nanette. I'm having the best time with mom and sisters. 😊
