The End of Another Busy Week

The first week of September is almost over. All my classes have their first test coming up. In addition to tests, I also made practice tests so students can see how online tests work. It's more work, but I think it will save time in the long run.

Zoom classes are going well, but online labs are a different matter. The company we picked to supply lab kits is inundated with orders and students haven't received their kits yet. So I started writing labs that students can do with common household items.
A group of students at the college tested positive for COVID, and they infected  another group, and now all are quarantined in  college dorms. The college is now tracing students, staff and faculty who were in close contact with these students. I'm glad my classes are fully online.

In the morning I go to office room just like I'd go to work. I take a break for lunch, and then start working again. I have more students during office hours now. I think they find it more convenient to log in to Zoom and talk to me when they have questions. So I keep the Zoom office hour link open, while grading and writing assignments. The other day when I stopped working and went to the kitchen, I realized that it was almost 8.30 pm, the same time I would come home from work after teaching the evening lab. Sometimes I close the office room door and pretend that the work is over.  I still have to learn not to answer emails after work hours. πŸ˜” I decided to turn off email notifications on the phone. Years ago one of my colleagues told me not to add work email to the phone, but I didn't listen. Now it's time to at least turn off notifications during weekends.

I decided not to do any work related things on Sunday and Monday. I have no classes on Monday because of Labor Day. So I worked until midnight on Friday and Saturday, and finished grading all assignments and writing labs. Today I started crocheting a placemat. I also watched several episodes of a detective story on Hoopla. Hoopla is a library media streaming platform, and  I can watch 20 items each month using my library account. Through our library system I have access to another streaming platform called Kanopy. It has movies and documentaries, while Hoopla also has TV shows. Because I canceled Netflix a while ago, it's nice to have these free services. I don't watch movies a lot, but I like watching mysteries, especially British TV series.

The beginning of a placemat.

I got this idea from a photo I saw on Facebook.  I made a circle from a piece of wire and stuck it in the pot. I want to train this Ivy around the circle. πŸ˜ƒ

Last month I contacted my insurance agent and asked if I could get a discount on the car insurance for not driving to work. She said there were no discounts other than the one we received back in April, but she changed my policy from commute to pleasure use and issued a refund. The refund check came yesterday, almost $90, and I deposited it electronically to the checking account. The convenience of online banking. 😊

Speaking of doing things online, the other day my retirement company almost gave me a heart attack. While doing the monthly financial update, I noticed that the account balance was zero! At first I thought that the website hadn't uploaded fully, but after logging out and in again, it was the same. Then I tried accessing the account on the iPad. Still the balance was zero. For a moment I was worried that someone had hacked the account, but then I realized that it was not that easy to take money out of my account.  They require multiple documents with my signature to withdraw money early. I sent an email to my financial advisor and his assistant, and went to bed.  Next morning, even before I received a reply from the advisor, the balance was back.  Later I learned that it was due to an unplanned internal site update (at least that the reason they gave me 😎).

Yesterday I picked another papaya, and a chili pepper. There are still passion fruits on the vine, but they are smaller.  It has been raining every evening, which is nice because I didn't have time to tend to plants.

I made another batch of deodorant using vegetable glycerin, shea butter, arrowroot flour and baking soda. It's a very easy recipe and a small container lasts for about 3 months. I also waxed my eyebrows. 😎 Before COVID I used to go to a salon to get my eyebrows done. I wanted to learn to wax, and even bought a small wax warmer from a thrift store. But I was hesitant. When I started working from home, I decided to give it a try. Even if I mess up, no one can see it up close. Ha ha! So I have been doing my eyebrows for several months now. It's getting better each time. It's still not as neat as the salon waxing, but I'm not really picky about it anyway. 😁

Have a wonderful week everyone. Stay safe. 🌼🌼🌼

This week I'm grateful for:
1) being able to work from home
2) video chats with Mom and sisters
3) free streaming services
4) online banking
5) rain
6) homegrown fruits
7) car insurance refund check

  1. SO glad your classes are all online. From what I understand around here the surge in Covid cases among college age kids is getting a little out of hand.

    1. I think it’s happening in almost every college town, Anne. I hope we will be back to normal next semester.

  2. One of the problems with working from home is the office is right there with you! I'm glad you are taking at least a couple of days off for the holiday weekend. Make sure you turn off your work email notifications during the hours you normally would not be working/available to students if you were going to the campus. Otherwise, it is easy to burn out. I'm glad you didn't get exposed to the students who tested positive. Take care and stay safe!

    1. Thank you Bless.
I don’t know how anyone would be safe when teaching on campus during a pandemic. There are labs where students must share equipment and then instructors have to grade paper assignments. Even with extra work, I’m relieved to be able to work from home.

I did turn notifications off for the weekend. I plan to do it every weekend, and probably in the evenings as well. 😊

  3. Fortunate that you are able to work from home under the circumstances. And yes most definitely turn your alerts off 😁. You still need time for you.

    1. I’m not doing checking emails this weekend, but sometimes I can’t help but think about lab assignments. I wish I could turn off ‘thinking about work’ part of my brain for a while. 😁

  6. Not having work email on the phone is a blessing. I decided not to have it on the phone until my workplace decides to pay for my phone contract. That is not likely to happen. I am glad your classes are online and you can stay safe. It is difficult though to call it a day. I am using a time tracker tool to make sure I don't put in ridiculous hours. I wonder if my students could organise a microscope so that I could do some microscopy teaching online, I never thought of that and reading about your labs with kits sent out to students makes me think that maybe something is possible. Fruit in the garden is amazing. We have a glut of apples and pears and still plenty of vegetables. Have a quiet week, hopefully with no late night work. xx

    1. Using a time tracker is a great idea. I must look into that.

There must be companies that sell the microscopes you need, for a reasonable price. There’s a high demand for lab kits now, because of the pandemic.

  7. Oh, I would have freaked out if my retirement account balance said zero. I'm SO glad it was just a computer update thing! Yay for the extra 90 dollars! Enjoy your day off.:-)

Hope you are having a relaxing weekend,Priscilla. And your book is coming along. 😊

  8. When I had my home office in my consulting days, I had a different notification tone for office email notifications on the phone. I would just ignore the office ones after hours. I also never ever took the phone into the bedroom at night. Everything and anything can wait until the morning. Waxing your own eyebrows-wow!

    1. I have this weird thing about wanting to reply to emails right away. So, even if it’s a different notification tone, I can’t relax after I hear it. 😁
So the best thing for me is to turn it completely off.

  9. Your work days are more busy now with online teaching that’s really evident, Nil. I am glad that you are setting aside some time for yourself to relax. Our library also offers the streaming services of Hoopla and Kanopy but we have much lower monthly , only 3 for Hoopla and 10 for Kanopy. I also enjoy the British mysteries the best. Lately, I have been trying audio books downloaded from the library in addition to e-books. We still also subscribe to Netflix and AcornTV streaming, but the costs for both are much less than the cable bills of some others. Glad you were able to get $ back on your auto ins this year too.

    1. Initially I had only 8 items on Hoopla. I don't know when it changed, but it's 20 now. I hope they will change it for you as well. :) I'm not sure about Kanopy number, I don't watch movies a lot.

  10. Neat plant trick! And I love your placemat. You did have a busy week. Glad you didn't lose your savings. I suppose you'll never know what really happened. It was good you left it for the night and the next morning it was solved. Andrea

  11. So scary how fast Covid gets to the college campus. So good you can work remotely. I use Hoopla too and love it. Very good idea about the insurance!

    1. Yes, it's scary how fast COVID spread among college students. A lot of students in close proximity so I think it's unavoidable. :(

  12. How neat that you already rcvd your $90 insurance check, that was fast! I'm so glad all of your classes are online this semester too. Your circle in the ivy is so neat. You'll have to show us again when it gets bigger. I hope you have a good week, Nil.

The ivy grows so slowly, but I fill post a photo later.

Thank you Belinda, I hope you have a wonderful week too. 😊

  13. Hi Nil, enjoyed seeing how you're spending your iso days, looks like you have a nice balance going between work and personal time, specially now you're turning your phone off. Eyebrow waxing....is that a thing ha ha don't take too much off😊

  14. Our classes started today. There were some huge add campus parties all weekend, so sure covid will spread fast now. I am on sabbatical, thankfully, so I only need to go in to my lab. I'm very careful crossing campus to avoid everyone! You are fortunate to teach all online. Stay safe. Celie

These partying students are either very irresponsible or very naive. Maybe both. Then they infect innocent people, take it home, and it continues.

I hope it’s safe to work in the lab.

  15. That's great, Nil. That must have been so scary to see your retirement account at zero. Good thing you were on top of it and straightened things out quickly. I have started turning my phone off at night for the same reason. Last night someone called me at 2:22 a.m.! I don't know who it was. Another work contact sent me a text at 4:30 a.m. Ugh. That's way too stressful.

I don’t turn my phone off because I want my family to be able to call me if there’s an emergency etc. But I turn off internet, and now turn off notifications as well.

I hope you are safe from the wildfires in CA, Stephenie. I thought about you, Bless and Anita when I saw it on TV.

  16. I've never liked notifications on my phone, so have always turned them off. Although nowadays, I do have silent ones for whoever comments on my blog so I can moderate and publish as needed. But other than that, my phone stays quiet - I tell my family that I'll get back to them at my convenience. They know to actually call (not text) if it's urgent. // The colleges in our area are going through spikes too... and the kids hate the quarantines, but hey, when you don't do what you're supposed to 🀷‍♀️ // I like the circle for the vine!! I should do that for my philodendron! Be blessed, Nil!
