This & That

I’ve been at mom’s for about two weeks now, and I’ve already gained 2 pounds! I’m not sure if I should be happy (my family thinks I’m too skinny) or sad ( I don’t think gaining weight that fast is good). However when I visit mom  I gain several pounds and then I lose it again within 5,6 months. I just have to a bit careful though because I don’t know when my metabolism starts slowing down now that I’m not a spring chicken. Another reason to exercise 😳.

There’s this little van that sells baked goods every morning and afternoon. It plays music, so you know when the van gets closer. The other day my sister bought me a fish bun and another type of sweet bun that has a bit of sugar sprinkled on the top. We called the latter one Kimbula banis or crocodile bun because of its shape.

Bakery van outside the gate.

One of the reasons for my weight gain.

Sister G also made one of her favorite dishes - pasta bake. She usually makes one vegetarian and the other with fish and eggs.

Pasta bake.

In between eating I was able to get two weeks worth of lesson plans done. 14 more to go. 😐
I also finished a book- Making Home by Sharon Astyk, and downloaded another one - Wild Edibles by Sergei Boutenko.

Tomorrow (June 5th) is a national public holiday in Sri Lanka. It's Eid Ul-Fitr, an Islamic holiday that marks the end of fasting during Ramadan. We have public holidays to commemorate significant events in Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. Sister G will be home tomorrow as she is a government employee, but employees in the private sector don't have this holiday unless she/he is Muslim. So sister S will be working. I was hoping to visit her, but we decided to postpone it for another day.

It's hard to find a time convenient to meet friends and relatives because everyone is busy on weekdays, and there are so many weekends before my vacation is over.

So tomorrow I think I'll stay home, make several phone calls to friends, start another lesson plan, and may be do a bit of crocheting.

I hope you all are having a wonderful week.

  1. A pastry van that came around my house playing music so I wouldn't miss it? I fear it would be my undoing. I am glad we only have the popsicle man around here because I can live without ice cream. I am not sure I could say no to those delicious looking buns.
Have a wonderful rest of your trip!

    1. Heheee. It’s tempting, but I decided not to buy them daily. We used to have ice cream vans too, but I haven’t seen them for years now.

  2. I seem to gain weight when I visit my mum too! I think they think we don't eat properly at home...or they just like to be a mum once again and provide a delicious feast for the brood.

Hope you are having an enjoyable restful time,

  4. Yum! Malu pan and kimbulla banis! I remember when the bakery man came (by bicycle, those days) to the house, every day! I can buy malu pan, here, at one of the Sri Lankan stores, or I make my own at home. Haven't done so in awhile, though (I cheat and use frozen bread dough).

    1. Once in a while I also make maalu pan with frozen bread dough. I’d say it’s not cheating, it’s being efficient . LOL

  5. Oh I thought you were home!

Of course you gain weight with all these goodies. :-)))) They are "tempting" you!

So sister S is not a muslim, since she will be working.... May I ask, what religion do you follow?

    Enjoy your time at home!!!!!!

    Gentle hugs...

    1. Sister S could have taken a day off too, but she had meetings. Now that everyone is busy I have to make appointments to even visit my sister. 😆
I’m Buddhist, but if you asked my sisters they would say not a good one because I rarely go to the temple.

  6. That's great that you are getting so many lesson plans done. Good luck with your crocheting. Those buns look interesting. The vehicle sounds like our ice cream trucks...

  8. Nil, I was wondering if you would be visiting your mum during the holidays. She must love seeing you each year. Your sisters too.

  10. Oh my, Nil, a pastry truck would be my undoing as well and it is why I avoid the local pastry shop where we live. I know what you mean about funding time to visit with friends who are working when you are not. Being retired now, we have time to travel and visit, but some others we know are still working or perhaps traveling as well so it becomes a coordination effort to get together. Your mother and sisters must be enjoying your visit as you are as well. Weight gain is usually an aftermath of good food and home cooking when with family. Continue to enjoy your vacation. 🙂

    1. Yes, sometimes I forget that even though I’m on vacation, everyone else works is working. And then on weekend they have kids’ stuff, other family obligations etc.

  11. A house-to-house pastry van sounds neat. I’m not well-informed about any of the religious diversity of Sri Lanka, sounds interesting. So many places where there was peace between groups are developing difficulties now, I don’t recall if I have read anything about Sri Lanka.

    1. There are some problems in Sri Lanka, Mae. It’s not really the regular people, but power hungry politicians who creates problems. I hope things will work out soon.
Thank you for reading and commenting .

  12. I love the little pictures you’re sharing of every day life in a place I’ve never been to before. 😊
Exercise goes better if you just view it as “an extra walk in the morning”. Have fun.

    1. I’ll add more photos soon. :). I recently noticed that because of security reasons even the nearby temple doesn’t allow photographing the premises.

  15. I'm glad that van doesn't come around where I live, I'm already over weight the way it is.

  16. That would be so neat to have a pastry van come around so you can buy pastries. I would order a chocolate croissant every day.

    1. Hehee I’d also like that. Unfortunately this pastry van doesn’t sell croissants.

  17. How wonderful to have a pastry van drive past your door Nil, I wish. Treasure being able to visit your Mum and enjoy her cooking without worrying about weight gain. I really miss not having my Mum around. Hope you have a wonderful holiday. I am late with this so perhaps you are back at work:)
