Another week went by very quickly.
Little by little I feel less stressed about the workload. Two more weeks until the end of this semester! 💃💃💃
This week I tried two new recipes.
The first one is called Dutch Baby pancake. I saw it on YouTube, and then found the recipe by the same chef here. I was expecting something similar to a pancake, but it was so light and fluffy. Like a souffle. I plan to change the recipe and make a savory version. 😊

I also made potato flat bread. I saw this recipe on Facebook. It needs 2 mashed potatoes, 1 cup of all purpose flour, 1/2 tsp of salt and 1/2 tsp of baking powder.

I received another produce box from Misfits Market. It had a small cucumber, a turnip, two beetroots, two sweet potatoes, two green peppers, onions, a bunch of parsley, Serrano peppers, and four types of fruits. I sprayed the box with Lysol before opening it, washed everything except parsley with soapy water and washed parsley in water with vinegar. Then I dried everything, put the box and wrapping material in the trash bin, and disinfected the counter top. It took almost 30 minutes.
I was tired and thinking what a bother it was until I realized how lucky I was. I could afford to have a box of organic produce delivered. Sometimes it is so easy to forget how fortunate we are in many ways.
The other day I saw a link to this article titled "These Photos Show the Staggering Food Bank Lines Across America" on Mae's Food Blog. It's heart breaking to see how people suffer without enough food.
We had a couple of rainy and cooler days. The garden is doing so well after rain.
I started this sweet potato vine from a small piece of store bought potato.
Yesterday I noticed these tiny brussels sprouts! I can't wait to pick them. I hope bugs won't destroy them. Already lubber grass hoppers are eating leaves.
I was so excited to see flowers on the passion fruit vine again. Hopefully there will be another crop of fruits in this summer. Mom said I could cook tender passion leaves, so I plan to make some soon. The only problem is that the vine is going up a cherry laurel tree and I need a ladder to get to tender leaves.

I had to go to my office to pick up a folder. We are supposed to do the annual review and I had all my professional development stuff in a folder in the office. While there, I also got the equipment to create extra videos in the summer. The parking lot next to our building was almost empty. There were couple of cars of colleagues, but I picked up the stuff I needed and left without meeting anyone.
I completed all assignments and tests for the upcoming week by Friday, and decided not to do anything work related during the weekend. I was about 90% successful. I replied to several emails from students who waited until the last moment to finish assignments. I started reading a new e-book, How Paris Became Paris - The Invention of the Modern City by Joan DeJean. This brings so many memories of the times I spent in France. It's been 11 years since I left Paris.
When this pandemic is over, and everything is back to normal, I will go there again. 🗼
This week I'm grateful for:
1) a safe trip to school.
2) a couple of rainy days.
3) more passion fruit flowers.
4) cool mornings.
5) another box of produce from Misfits Markets.
6) having a backyard.
7) phone chats with family and friends.
Nil

Your garden is doing so well. How exciting! I don't do all that with my produce. I just rinse it and eat it. How fun to return to Paris...
ReplyDeleteSometimes I can be a little bit too paranoid. 😊 So I wash/wipe everything.
DeleteSounds like you've had a very productive weekend, Nil. You got a lot of teaching work done and tried two new recipes, as well! I might like to try those potato pancakes, maybe when I get more potatoes! Your garden is doing so well! All your careful tending is showing results!
ReplyDeleteYes, we are very fortunate to be able to have food delivered to us. Prior to this pandemic, I had read that many people don't have $400 in savings for an emergency, without needing to borrow. It is very sad.
I’ve also read that about low savings. Sometimes it’s not because of low income. I know people who get paid more than me, but spend everything like there’s no tomorrow. 🙁
DeleteHahaa the garden is doing well thanks to the rain. I’m a lazy gardener. 😁
Your garden is looking great!
ReplyDeleteSo do the Dutch Baby pancakes!
Thank you, Anne. 😊
DeleteThe story of the lines of people waiting for food at the food bank is very sad. We are lucky aren't we, if we have food!
ReplyDeleteYes, earthmotherwithin. We are lucky in so many ways. I can’t imagine not being able to afford food, especially when one is a parent. It’s heartbreaking.
DeleteOooh I am excited about your passionfruit, pity its crawling up the tree, like my dragon fruit lol
ReplyDeleteHehee it’s my fault, Bridget. I didn’t properly train the passion vine.
DeleteI love potato bread, a long-time friend is Irish and always makes it, delicious. I had passionfruit starting, but drift from Council spraying on the park nearby has killed the vine and other plants.....to say I was furious is a little mild! You've had a good week and accomplished much, and how wonderful to have a dream of returning to Paris one day.
ReplyDeleteI looked up Irish potato bread recipes. There are many variations. Now I have more recipes to try! 😁
DeleteThe recipe I used is an Indian one, called aloo paratha.
Oh, I’m so sad to hear about your passionfruit vine. Those weedicides are so dangerous. Sometimes county people spray weedicide in the lake, and when ask they claim it’s not bad. Fortunately it happens very rarely and I haven’t noticed any drift.
Oh yum yes.....aloo paratha!
DeleteOh, I do hope you are able to get Brussels sprouts before the bugs get them. Fresh Brussels sprouts are SO delicious! I am thankful for email. We got to have our writing group meeting via email.:-)
ReplyDeleteYes, Priscilla. I too love fresh Brussels sprouts.
DeleteI hope your book is going well. 😊
I'm taking extra care with everything that comes into my home, making sure I dispose of the outer wrapping straight away and disinfectant the contents appropriately. Adding in the hand washing and disinfecting worktops and door handles has turned this into a time consuming task but, like you, I think it needs to be done.
ReplyDeleteYour garden is looking good. I hope your Brussel sprouts survive any bug attacks and you get to enjoy them.
Yes, Eileen. It takes a lot of time to disinfect things. Just today I wondered if I had to disinfect the disinfectant bottle! 😁
DeleteYour garden looks so lush. It sounds like you had a good week. I haven't been to Paris in 16 years.
ReplyDeleteIt was a good week Anita. I was able to get a lot of school work done and that always makes me happy. 😊
DeleteI’m sure Paris has changed a lot in the last 10-15 years. I’ve been wanting to go back for a long time, but something else always come up and change my plans.
Hi Nil, glad you are less stressed about the semester. Looks like it will be over before you know it. Your Brussels sprouts are so cute! I love them and could eat them everyday. You got red pears in your MM box. I love all pears, but really like the red ones as they don't bruise as easily as the yellow pairs.
ReplyDeleteI didn’t know that about red pears, Belinda. Good to know. I plan to poach them in red wine. 😊
DeleteOhhhh you lived in Paris??????? Oh please tell us about that, some time.
ReplyDeleteWe were there for 8 days, in 1999. Which is like a lifetime ago, in what has been happening there, in recent years. We'd never go now, even before this COVID-19, I mean.
But it is so interesting, to hear of someone, who lived there, for a time.
And yes, the wiping down is a chore. And also yes, we are lucky, to be able to have items, to wipe down. -smile-
My wish...
Depending on your circumstances,
Let the healthy, go back to work,
Compromised people, still stay home.

I will write about my time in France sometime soon, Wisps. I have very fond memories of France and its people. 😊
DeleteNil, I have made Dutch Baby pancakes in the oven using my cast iron skillet and they were so good. I read that apples could be added but didn't have any available, but next time. That potato flatbread looked really good. Last night I found and used a homemade biscuit recipe which was enough for 2 people and forgot to take photos to post. But they didn't brown up as much as I would have liked, so I will need to retry and then take photos. I hope the brussel sprouts survive as I like them, but my husband doesn't so we hardly include them in our shopping.
ReplyDelete
DeleteI had to bake the Dutch Baby pancake a bit longer than the time mentioned in the recipe, to make it brown. Actually, after I took this photo, I decided to put it back in the oven, under the broiler for about 2 minutes. 😊
It’s great that you found that article from the link on my blog. It’s so hard to think about the people whose lives have been made impossibly hard because of the pandemic. Your produce delivery looks good. We picked up a grocery order today and also spent a while washing containers and so on,though maybe not as thoroughly as you did.
ReplyDeleteBe well... mae at maefood.blogspot.com
I can be a bit of a neat freak, Mae. 😂
DeleteSo sometimes I tend to over sanitize.
Two weeks of term left, you are lucky!! I have 10 weeks to go and feel really anxious about it because I am running two courses without backup...
ReplyDeleteThe potato bread is very traditional here, we like to eat it in a morning roll with a dash of ketchup. Or maybe with a fried egg or a a rasher of bacon. Full Scottish breakfast in a roll. Richard sometimes makes homemade tattle scone (that's what we call it here) but mostly, we get in the shops, it is a staple food.
It is so weird to see Brussels sprouts in the spring and early summer. It is a typical winter vegetable here but maybe that's because nobody ever tried to grow it for summer harvest 😂.
Hope the rest of your week is going well. Take care x
Your garden sounds very lush Nil, and I envy you growing brussel sprouts. The bugs would definitely eat them here. It's just not cold enough either. I've never eaten potato flatbread. It really is the ultimate isolation food isn't it? Flatbread really isn't that difficult is it, I should make more of it.Take care, Pauline
ReplyDeleteIt's getting warm here, Pauline. Hopefully Brussels sprouts will grow before it's too hot. :)
DeleteDutch Baby pancakes would be delicious, Nil. I have only made them once before myself and had completely forgotten this deliciousness until you posted this. I must dig out that recipe and soon!! Glad you are beginning to feel less stress with your work too. MegXx
ReplyDeleteI wonder why it's called Dutch Baby. :)
DeleteThe pancake looks delicious. I might just give that recipe a try.
ReplyDeleteI also wipe down all my shopping before I put it away. It takes me ages :) X
Hahaa now I try not to go to stores mainly because I'm too lazy to disinfect things. :)
DeleteThose are such great new recipes... and the brussel sprout plants are SO exciting!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading and commenting, Heidi. :)
DeleteYes, I'm very excited about Brussels sprouts, this is the first time I'm growing them. :)
Excellent energy and I LOVE THE VEGGIES! And I make potato flat bread all the time. It's the best. Works well with yams and sweet potatoes too. Pure heaven. I also love seeing your garden. A truly wonderful thing to be grateful for! Hi. I'm Ivy.
ReplyDeleteHi Ivy! Thank you for reading and commenting. 😊
DeleteI’m going to bookmark your air fry playlist. I am thinking of buying an air fryer.
Hey Nil! They are so fun. Drop me an email if I can be of any help. I had an air fry lunch today. Spicy noodles. So yum!
