Another week went by very quickly. Because of MLK holiday, I had only three days of classes. There were two committee meetings on Friday, one in the morning and one in the early afternoon. In between, I made practice tests for all classes, and graded several assignments.
Last week I had a mammogram and the doctor's office took a full week to call me with results. Because last year they called me several hours after the test, I was nervous about the delay. But everything is normal. That's a big relief.
This week I made borscht. This is the recipe I used. It was okay, but I think I should have added cannellini beans. I didn't have any. Do you have a tested borscht recipe?

I was planning to do grocery shopping in the weekend, but since Friday I had a bad headache. It ruined the entire weekend. Sometime I felt like someone hit the back of my head with a two by four. This morning when I woke up with the headache, I decided not to use any pain killers, and used a heating pad instead. Finally the headache disappeared several hours ago.
This morning I cooked enough food for a couple of days. I picked several types of greens from the backyard, and sautéed them in olive oil. I also picked two small papayas.
I decided to freeze the sourdough starter for a while. I've been eating too much white flour - lots of sourdough bread, cinnamon raisin bread, sourdough biscuits etc. I wonder if that's the reason for my headaches, because I read that tyramine (an amino acid) rich food can trigger headaches, and that homemade yeast leavened breads contain tyramine. So I fed the sourdough starter and put it in the freezer.

Tomorrow is going to be a long busy day. I should go to bed soon.

Borscht is such a beautiful soup that I will never eat. Beets are one fo the three foods that never touch my lips.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could grow tropical fruits, but we have a couple of days each winter that make it impossible.
Have a great headache free week!
sorry to hear you had such a bad headache. i have never made borscht, but i do like to eat it:) We just get an email and a letter in the mail when we have a mammogram. no phone calls unless it's bad news i guess. have a good week.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad your mammogram results were normal, Nil. Sorry to hear about your headache - good idea to freeze the sourdough starter and see if not eating a lot of sourdough bread helps. Also, have you checked your blood pressure, recently? I used to get really bad headaches and migraines before my high blood pressure was diagnosed. The headaches might also be stress-related. I'm glad the heating pad worked and I hope you will not be bothered by headaches anymore. But, if they do continue, you might want to mention them to your doctor. Hope you have a good week ahead.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to read that you've had such a nasty headache for so long - I hope it's gone now and won;lt return. Not at all nice for you!

Glad your headache finally went away. Not eating sourdough bread for awhile is a good way to test if too much tyramine is causing your headaches. I've never made a successful borscht, but I'm sure one of your commenters will have a good recipe!
ReplyDeleteNil, I hope you are feeling much better. Do you have any Lavender essential oil? Rubbing some on your temples helps to lessen the headache, and the aroma is lovely. Make sure it is pure Lavender oil. I didn't know that about homemade yeast. I wouldn't be without my heating pad. I use it every day on my hip. Especially when it's cold and damp. Try the Lavender....a simple joy.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to read you suffered a headache. I find that if I allow myself to become dehydrated I suffer more headaches. I love borscht but have never made it despite growing lots of beets every summer.
ReplyDeleteGood news on the test results, even if the delay was annoying and maybe the reason for the headache? While I enjoy making soup, borscht is not on my to-do list as beets are not in my favorite veggie group.
ReplyDeleteInteresting they called you the same day last year with your results... here we always get a letter in the mail about a week or two later. I guess it might depend on the clinic and company that do the testing. My grandma made borscht once when I was little... I did not like it lol. Just not my thing, I guess. There are many food triggers for migraines (I've lived with daily migraines all my life), I kept food diaries for a few years but nothing specific ever happened related to food for mine. Aspartame is a huge migraine trigger, too... they add that to soda and other drinks nowadays. Some people have such a bad migraine reaction to it they end up in the hospital. Hope your head is feeling much better now that a few days have passed! Hugs and blessings, Nil!
ReplyDeleteHmmm, that's interesting about your headache. I don't do well with white flour. It makes my joints ache in an extreme way. I had to stop baking for that reason. I'm glad your headache wasn't Covid. Sometimes if I have a headache, washing my hear will make it go away. I think those are tension or energy related.
ReplyDeleteNIl,
ReplyDeleteToo bad about your headaches. Sometimes I just drink a lot of water and it helps. I have a borsht recipe that I like with lentils -it's not traditional but its good.If you go to my site and do a search for borsht, I have 4 recipes that will come up. The red lentil borsht is my favorite.
