This & That

I had several productive days.

I have been organizing an area near the backdoor, where I keep empty pots and some potted plants. There were several plants that needed to be transplanted, including a jackfruit plant, a couple of moringa plants and a fig. I had a small fig tree in the front yard, but it died several months ago. So, I removed the dead plant, dug the area and added compost, and planted another fig that had been in a 5 gallon bucket.

I also planted the jackfruit near the back fence, and one of the moringa plants on the south side of the yard.

Fig.

Inspired by Judee's posts at Gluten Free A - Z Blog I made oat pancakes and scrambled tofu. I have been looking for new breakfast recipes and these two are keepers! Thank you Judee. 💗

I also made an Asian cucumber salad. The cucumber was spiral cut, though I should have cut it thinner. The salad dressing includes soy sauce, rice vinegar, garlic, gochujang paste, red chili flakes, sesame oil, sugar and sesame seeds.

Yesterday I ran out of yarn for my blanket. Now I have 71 granny squares and need 133 more. That means another 7 skeins of yarn.  A skein is $12.99 at the nearest craft store. I decided to wait for a coupon so it is cheaper. I bought previous skeins for $8 each.

My book reading is going very slowly. I am still on chapter 2 of Founding Mothers - The Women Who Raised Our Nation. However, I watched several documentaries on PBS. I watched a 2 part documentary about Benjamin Franklin, and just today finished watching episode 2 of 3 part documentary about Roosevelts.  While crocheting, sometimes I watch YouTube videos about simple living.

I have a little over one month before the new semester starts. I teach two summer classes, but they are fully online. Compared to the usual teaching load of 8 classes, I have more free time now, which is nice.

Now I am going to make a cup of tea, and read Founding Mothers.

Take care everyone.

  1. I have 4 small pots with herbs in it that need to be planted in something more spacious. I keep putting it off because of the oppressive heat we have been having here. Thanks for trying my 2 recipes and thanks for the shout out!! Much appreciated.

  2. Looking for yarn yesterday for the first time in a while, I think it has gone up shockingly in recent years. No such thing as cheap yarn nowadays and, sadly, it is cheaper to buy a jumper than to make it. xx

    1. Yes, Joy. I used to buy yarn from thrift stores, but they don't carry yarn like they used to. I guess people don't have any extra yarn to donate.

  3. You have been very productive! I hope you find a good sale on the yarn you need to finish your blanket. Your cucumber salad looks and sounds great. There's a container of gochujang that my daughter bought in the fridge; I might try using some of it in a cucumber salad, myself.

    1. Gochujang is too sweet for my taste. I bought it thinking it was extra hot. :)

  4. Good luck with the fig tree. Mine died, too. I need to try again. I hope you can find the yarn at a better price. Sometimes Webs has good sales. I still have a lot of yarn that was given to me by ladies in my knitting group. It's in storage bins, upstairs.

    1. I usually buy yarn from thrift stores, Stephanie. But it's not easy to find yarn enough for big projects there.

  5. You are busy! I love figs, and have two trees. One is newer and small like yours. It has figs this year for the first time. It is two years old, the other is four and is large with many figs. Good luck with your new one, sorry about the old! andrea

  6. It will be nice to have your own figs in time, so hope the replanting goes well, Nil. I was wondering if you liked the oat pancakes as they looked quite different than regular ones. Also, to answer your comment on my recent blog about stamp price increases. Yes, there are forever stamps for international postage and these were $1.55 until today and are now $1.65 so I bought some ar the former price last week.

    1. I do like oat pancakes, Beatrice. The first time they came out a bit thicker because I left it sitting on the counter and oat flour absorbed too much milk and got denser.
This morning I made a thinner batter and was able to make thinner pancakes.
