Last week I got my very first eyeglasses. I was having difficulties when reading and, so I went to a doctor to get my eyes tested. I got glasses with varifocal lenses and I have to get used to wearing them.

I have three weeks of vacation time left, and every weekend is busy with meeting friends and relatives. Weekdays are less busy though. I completed more than half of my cross stitch.

After reading Phil's post on his blog I decided to challenge myself by trying to live on 50% of my income. I want to pay off my mortgage as soon as possible, so I want to see how much extra I can save by taking this challenge. When I rented an apartment, I was able to save more than 50% of my take home salary, because my rent was low and there were no home insurance or property taxes. After I bought the house, The first few months were really expensive. I tiled floors and did few repairs.
My next pay check comes in September so I want to wait until then to start the challenge. I already created a new budget. To save 50% of my take home salary, I reduced my grocery budget to $140. I will also use cash for groceries in September. I still have a bit of wiggle room, so I can always adjust the amount. I didn't cut back anything else. I still have Netflix ($10.70), twice a month yard service ($50) and $35 for miscellaneous spending. With this new budget, I plan to apply $300 each month toward the principal of my mortgage.
I look forward to this challenge and will share my progress in a couple of months.

Goodness me Nil, the time has gone by so quickly since you arrived at your mum's place. I am sure you are having a wonderful time. I need glasses for reading and these days I try to make sure I have a pair in each room of the house. LOL!
ReplyDeleteYes Chel, I can't believe how fast time goes by. :)
DeleteBeautiful rose, and your cross stitch look so pretty. Wow...$140.00. I spend about $220.00 per month on groceries. Let us know how it goes.
ReplyDelete$140 is going to be a challenge. :)
DeleteFrugalwoods have an uber frugal July challenge, but my July expenses are not regular as I'm still on vacation. But I will learn some tips from participants and hopefully will be able to keep my grocery expenses down.
Good on you for taking the challenge and I really look forward to following your progress.
ReplyDeleteYou have obviously been working really hard on your cross stitch, it's coming along so quickly. I like the scene too, makes me feel warm especially with this cold weather we're having at the moment.
Keep enjoying your holidays.
Kylie
Thanks Kylie :)
DeleteI used to enjoy cross stitch, but sadly my hands and arms got sick and I can't do it anymore. Yours is lovely!
ReplyDeleteThank you. :)
DeleteGood luck on the budget challenge! It sounds like everyone is cheering you on.:-)
ReplyDeleteYour cross stitch is coming along and is beautiful. I haven't done needle work in many years. You are inspiring me.
Thanks Priscilla.
DeleteI think I bought this cross stitch kit on sale, either in 2009 or 2010. Hopefully I'll finish it before 2017 ends. :)
