This & That - What I did This Week

Can you believe that there's only a week left in October?
This week was a productive one. I was less busy at work (no tests until next week, so less grading).
Tuesday was my mom's birthday. 💖 She is 67 years old now. I called her Monday night, when it was Tuesday morning in Sri Lanka. We video chat every weekend when sister is at home. Mom doesn't use a computer or a smart phone, so when sister is busy there is no way to video chat.

I wanted to wash windows, but wasn't able to complete the task. Every window has a screen on the bottom part, and I couldn't remove them to clean the glass. I was afraid to force the screens out, so I only washed the top portion. I will ask a friend to show me how to remove the screens, and finish the job sometime next weekend.

I finished sewing curtains panels for the big window in the spare room. I also cut another shirt to make quilt blocks. So far I only cut two out of 12 shirts, so this is going to be a slow project.

Quilt blocks.
I  bought 4 cloth napkins for $2 at an estate sale, and a pack of embroidery floss for $2 at a thrift store. I think I will do a design on napkins, either with fabric paint or embroidery floss.
Estate sale & thrift store finds.
I also did some work on the Christmas swap item. I want to finish it by next weekend and mail in the first week of November.

This week I cooked green beans and lentil for lunches, and also used lamb stew and cauliflower curry from the freezer.

Green beans and lentil.
I also boiled chickpea in the pressure cooker, and sautéed with mustard, curry leaves, onions and red chili flakes. I love having this as a snack. In Sri Lanka, we often have sautéed chickpea  with freshly grated coconut for breakfast.

Sautéed chickpeas.
This morning while I was having breakfast, a flock of ducks also came to the backyard for their breakfast. I counted 15 in the yard, and several more outside the fence. They spent about 10 minutes picking up things (worms? or tender grass?) and then flew away.

I'm not happy about the way my exercising going. I always find something else to do without doing yoga. I should be more disciplined.

Results of this week's to-do list:
1) Sew curtain panels.
2) Cut quilt blocks.
3) Continue Christmas swap item.
4) Wash windows. - Partially done.
5) Iron clothes.
6) Do yoga.-  Not done.
7) Sleep 7 hrs. - Not done in the weekend.

Tasks for the next week:
1) Wash windows.
2) Cut more quilt blocks.
3) Finish Christmas swap item.
4) Mend a pair of jeans.
5) Do Yoga!
6) Sleep 7 hrs.

How was your week? Do you exercise regularly?

  1. I got some napkins from an op-shop too this past week, Nil. They have already got little cross stitch roses embroidered on them. You'll get there with your quilt blocks, even if it is a slow process, you'll get them all cut out in the end. I have been stitching little motifs on some small cotton bags ready to hold Christmas time soaps. I'm enjoying that. I do exercise regularly, walking is something I love to do. Meg:)

  2. Belated birthday wishes to your mum Nil.
I look forward to seeing what you do with the napkins.
How lovely to have all the ducks visit, I bet now they made a stop at yours they will return in the future.

    1. Thank you Marlene.

There are ducks in the spring lake nearby, so often they come to my yard.
However this is the first time 15 ducks came together.

  3. I love all the ducks in your yard, are they migrating? You have a lot to do before you start your quilt, but you'll get there, I always like to have a slow project on the go. I get up early and do about 40 minutes of yoga, it's taken me a while to be that disciplined though, so don't give up. I also walk Mirrhi twice a day for about 40 minutes, sometimes longer, but when you're working it's hard to fit it all in. Your chickpeas look delicious, I often have curry for breakfast.

    1. No Nanette, there are ducks in the lake behind my house. Most of the time, only a couple or so come into the yard, but for some reason a whole flock came by yesterday.
It's great that you do yoga daily. Perhaps I should try doing yoga in the morning. I'm too tired to do yoga at the end the day.

  4. You've had a busy week. I love the photograph of the ducks.
Lack of exercise is something which is bothering me at the moment too. I never seem to find the time. X

    1. Same here Jules. Most days I come home late, and am too tired. In the weekends I find other things to do.

  5. Nil, I have become very lazy where exercise is concerned. I used to be so enthusiastic :-( I can feel I have put on weight so I really need to get more motivated soon before it gets too hot and I will have another excuse. LOL!

    1. Chel, I think laziness is my reason for postponing yoga. Weight is not a problem for me yet, but I can feel my metabolism has slowed down a bit as I get older. 😔

  6. Sauted chickpeas with coconut sounds like a DELICIOUS breakfast!

Yes, I exercise everyday, but I admit I wouldn't move as much if I didn't have a dog. The dog sits by the door and whines if I haven't taken him for a walk or jog. The hardest part is starting, and then I feel energized and happy once I get going.

    1. Good for you for exercising daily, Priscilla.
I am too lazy to find time for it. 😐

  7. Hi Nil, I bet those ducks were gobbling up worms. Birds have such excellent eyesight. My Silkies love the red wiggler from the compost pile. I look forward to seeing your embroidery. Do you have a bike? I find that riding a bike is an easy and fun way to exercise. I like using mine with a bike trailer to run errands. I do yoga each night before bed. It kind of has to be a habit, I think. Sometimes I just do a few poses and practice the breathing. It helps not to feel like I have to do a complete class. Keep up the great work.

    1. Haha.. you should see me trying to ride a bike. I can ride only in straight lines. LOL
I can tell by your photos that you do yoga Stephenie. You have an excellent figure.
Perhaps I should start with a couple of poses first. The hard part for me is to make it a habit.

  8. Guess what I had for brunch, today? Sauteed chickpeas! Ha, ha!

You had a productive week, with going to work, washing windows, sewing curtains, cutting quilt blocks, and cooking for the week. There are only so many hours in the day, after all.

Loved the photo of the ducks in your yard! They look like moscovy ducks, to me. Sorry, I maybe retired, now, but the biologist in me rises up every now and then, and I feel the need to identify every bird and plant I see! LOL! I once took a field zoology course at UF-Gainesville - there were so many wonderful birds to identify! I still have my field guide to birds of North America (and the Birds of Ceylon book, although that one is falling apart!), but I tossed my field guide to the fresh water fishes of the Great Lakes Area (from when I was studying in Wisconsin). :)

Looking forward to seeing what you do with those cloth napkins. You found a bargain there, with the napkins and the embroidery floss!

Hope your week goes well; hard to believe that this is the last week of this month!

    1. Bless, yes I think they are Muscovy ducks. I have a couple of bird feeders, so I bought several bird books to identify birds. I find it so entertaining to watch them.
I've never taken biology or zoology classes. When one of my friends told me the doves that visit my feeders were mourning doves, I thought they were morning doves. Because that's when I usually see them, in the morning! Heheee. That's when I decided it's time to buy a couple of bird books.

  9. Hi! The cloth napkins are a great idea to embroider. I hope your mom had a great birthday! I'm sure her favorite part was the video chat! (I know, being a mom myself, of adult children!) Those are really neat ducks! Andrea

    1. Thanks Andrea. I think all moms are the same. No matter how old we are, for moms we are still their little kids. :)

  10. I love ducks in general. We live near a very shallow lake and often get mallards and mudhens in the yard. My neighbor hates them though because after a nice stroll through my grass they go for a swim in her salt water pool. Your chickpea breakfast sounds so yummy. I don't have a pressure cooker, but I suspect I could cook them in the slow cooker. I am with you on the idea of riding a bike-no one wants to see my bottom on a bike seat!!!

    1. I've never cooked chickpeas in the slow cooker Anita. I normally soak them overnight, and cook for 30 minutes in the pressure cooker.

Heheee Your bike comment made me laugh. :)

  11. You always get more things done than you believe, Nil, and whenever I whine that my day has been unproductive, my husband reminds me of what I did accomplish. And, once I think about what he’s said, it seems I did do more than I thought! I have been exercising on the treadmill in our buildings gym and enjoy listening to podcasts as the time goes by and I learn new things too. The foods you showed...lentils, chickpeas and greenbeans are all foods I enjiy but never had chickpeas for breakfast.

    1. That's so true, Beatrice. Recently I started writing down all the projects I did once I bought this house. I was amazed. I normally tend to minimize how much I do, so it was a real eye opener.

  12. We went for an early walk this morning, so much easier if someone else can get you out the door. As it gets a lot warmer, my walks will have to be very early or quite late. I love your curry type ideas. I have just cooked up a whole batch of chickpeas, some for hummus, so can you tell me what measurements you use for sauteeing them with the curry leaves, mustard etc. That sounds really yummy and simple when you know how:). Thanks Nil, Pauline
