This week I was planing to do yard work, but I only went outside to pick passion fruits and add vegetable scraps to the compost pile. I have several excuses for not doing yard work - it was cold, I was busy, I had to grade tests etc. etc. - but the main reason was my laziness. πŸ˜”

I did have two stacks of tests to grade. To free up the weekend, I went grocery shopping on Thursday. It was my short work day, so I went to vote and then went to BJs.  Though I hear that people are panic buying water, toilet paper etc., the store was not crowded. I didn't buy water or toilet paper, so I didn't notice any shortage.

On Friday I volunteered at a conference. This is a conference organized annually by our college. A colleague and I joined the registration committee and helped with organizing name badges and filling  goody bags. Later in the day, I did the weekly cleaning and laundry, and also  made a lamb stew. 😊

Lamd stew and roti.

I received an Angel Trumpet cutting from a member of a Facebook gardening group. I gave her two passion fruit plants. I have several plants that have outgrown the pots they are in.  I really  need to tend to these. Spring break starts in a week, so hopefully I will be able to do some yard work. Spring break to-do list is already too long. 😎

On Saturday I woke up with a runny nose. So I had another excuse for not working outside. I'm allergic to pollen! I made roti  for brunch and had it with lamb stew. I spent a little bit of time doing redwork embroidery, but mostly spent time reading.  At this rate, I think it will take a year to complete the embroidery.

Redwork embroidery - going so slooooow...

I'm reading another Charles Lenox book, A Stranger in Mayfair. This is the 4th book in the series. As I write this I'm sipping a cup of coriander and ginger tea. I still have to make vinaigrette for a leek salad, prepare the lunch box for tomorrow and fill up water bottles. I'd better turn off the computer now.

Have a wonderful week all. 🌼🌼🌼

This week I'm grateful for:
1) the Angel Trumpet cutting received from a member of a gardening group.
2) more passion fruits from the vine.
3) leftover food.
4) early voting.
5) the colleague who gave me a ride to a volunteering event.
6) having time to start another book of Charles Lenox series.
7) birds in the backyard.

  1. Looks like the birds are enjoying your garden! Your roti looks good! I sent all the leftover rotis with my daughter, so have to make more, if I want some! Your redwork is very pretty. Are you using a back stitch to embroider it? I hope your allergies get better and you are able to work in your garden. I'm sure you are looking forward to spring break. A few of the schools and colleges here are closing a bit early or conducting classes online, due to concerns about the corona virus. I hope you have a good week ahead and stay safe!

    1. Today we were asked to plan for offering classes online. Even my face to face classes have all their material, grades etc online already, so it won’t be a big problem for me. I’m so looking forward to spring break. πŸ˜€

  3. Your redwork is going to be so pretty. It can be nice to have a slow stitching project to pick up and put down as the mood takes you, with no deadlines. I have a couple of angel trumpets I grew from cuttings last year....I planted them where they shade the north western side of my house and they grew so quickly they're now doing that.....I have a high set house, around 6.5 ft to the verandah, so they're quite tall. And the perfume that wafts into the house on a hot summer night, oh just divine! You've had a good week, glad you were "lazy" πŸ˜‰

    1. The lady who gave me the cuttings said her trees are about 8 ft tall. I didn’t know angel trumpet had a nice perfume. Good to know. 😊 I’m going to plant one closer to my bedroom window.

  7. We have two more weeks here until we are on Spring Break. I am working everyday next week and I am so grateful for that. I hope you enjoy your Spring Break next week. I know what you mean when you say you have a list of things to do that week.

The Bradford pear trees are in bloom here, so the pollen is really bad right now. I was outside at my Dad's talking to him the other day for 2 hours and I sneezed the rest of that evening because of the pollen.

Your lamb stew looks so good. I hope you have a good week, Nil. :)

    1. I’m glad you have continuous work, Belinda.

I think here it is oak and cherry laurel pollen. My nose is sensitive to so many things, but pollen makes my eyes watery, so it’s harder.

  10. I love roti. I really need to learn how to make them because it is not easy to get them in the shops and we don't often eat out. It is pollen time, not good for pollen allergy sufferers. I always get "scratchy" eyes when the pussy willow is in blossom but luckily I have no other allergies. I hope whatever pollen causes your allergy finishes flowering soon x

    1. Cherry laurel trees are full of flowers, so I think that’s what makes me sneeze. There’s also an oak tree in my backyard.
I’m sensitive to so many things (dust, scented laundry powder, smell of strong paint etc), so it doesn’t take a lot for my nose to start acting up.

  11. I have some Angel's Trumpet trees. I love them, but they spread like crazy. I now have six or seven... Gorgeous birds in your photos. I think pollen does a number on me, too. I suspect that it gives me nose bleeds.

    1. I need something that grows fast, and needs less maintenance, so angel trumpet sounds like something suitable for my yard. 😊
Nose bleeds sound scary to me.

  12. Nil, It's hard to believe it's so cold where you are when we are melting here.Have you tried eating local honey from close to your home if you can get it as a natural antidote for allergies. I believe it works, apparently the honey improves your resistance to the pollens you are exposed to. Not sure how long it takes to work. Your lamb stew and roti looks delicious.I must check out the Charles Lenox books for something different as you recommend them. Cheers, Pauline x

    1. It’s not really cold, Pauline. It’s just cold for me. 😊Anything below 72-71°F (22-21°C) is cold for me. πŸ˜€

  13. Hope you are feeling better, Nil, and I agree with a previous comment that to me it seems you did quite a bit. That said there's nothing wrong (and a lot right) about taking time to relax with tea and a good read.

  14. I love your embroidery. You have really neat wildlife! It's good BJ's wasn't crowded. We'll be going to Costco soon, so we will see if we notice any more crowds or shortages. So far, not many people here are concerned. Andrea

    1. I’ve read about lines at Costco, but BJs was quiet.
Here people are somewhat concerned as there’s one confirmed case in our county. I think we shouldn’t be paranoid or completely disregard it. Neither extreme is good.
I hope you won’t find crowds or shortages at Costco.

  18. Nil, your red work embroidery is looking lovely. It's such a vibrant colour to stitch with. My son suffers quite badly with pollen allergy leading to chronic rhinitis. It's so hard to avoid pollen so really feel for you. Hard to work in the garden when it makes you sneeze and snuffle. Meg:)
